Developmental Editing
& Line Editing
You have finished your manuscript, but by now you are too close to the story and may wonder if you've overlooked possible plot holes. Perhaps the characters' dialogue feels a bit unnatural. In that case, a developmental edit is what you are looking for. During the process, I will not only address those issues, but also point out if a single character could serve the role of two, whether the general pacing of the text needs rethinking, if action sequences are convincing, or if a different period in time would be better suited for your story. This type of editing is particularly invaluable in world-building, where one can sometimes get lost in the setting's invented laws of physics or magic, let alone societal rules you've created yourself!
After developmental editing comes line editing, where the text is examined line by line, preserving the writer's style and ensuring the tone is consistent throughout. I will check for cliches, run-on sentences, and rhythm. I will make sure each word serves its purpose and sometimes suggest alternatives that would work better. Line editors might flag certain grammatical or spelling errors, though these are primarily a copy editor's responsibility. I am one of those line editors who'll make sure to point out any glaring mistakes when I dive into the nitty-gritty.
